Photoshop Dodge and Burn

The original is the top photo and the second photo is photoshoped. I played around with the level of color, and may have played too much. It may be too contrasty or something. I created a 50% gray layer, and burned the grass to create more texture. I also burned the tree line in the background.

The first photo is the original and the second is photoshoped. I adjusted the color level, and then burned the ground. By burning the ground it brought out more texture within the grass. I tried to burn around the right eye to darken it up a bit, and burned part of the nose to create contrast between the grass and nose. I used the clone stamp to take out the other two horses in the background. I would have liked the nose to be in focus more, but I did not get another chance to get this shot. Maybe next time.

The first photo is the original and the second is the photoshop version. I started out by adjusting the color level of the photo, and then I made a 50% gray layer. I dodged within both of the horses faces, and burned the trees in the background. I also dodged the brown horses nose to allow it to stand out from the trees.

  1. Tonia,

Have you tried the new dodge and burn techniques on the horse photo you posted on the discussion board yet? Maybe the overlay method will help lighten the dark area around their necks??

    Nice work! Murph

  3. When I first starting looking at the lesson material for this week, I thought I your horse photo in the discussion board! Did you try it on that photo?
You did a great job here creating a nice balance that makes the horses stand out as a focal point.
